With the surprising suspension of Robinson Cano for allegedly using a PED, there were serious concerns that the Seattle Mariners may start falling apart. But they haven’t, and the team has continued to shine in recent weeks. Mike Zunino, Mitch Haniger, Dee Gordon, and others have all stepped up and shown what they are made of to keep the team moving forward. That’s great news for the team and for the fans, all of whom have been discouraged by the struggles the Mariners seemed to have every season for the last several years.

While it’s still early in the season, the Mariners are showing heart and bringing heat in ways they simply weren’t able to do in the past. That’s important for a team that has struggled, because they’re showing that they’re bigger than one person and can offer more than just what a player or two can bring. They’re a true team, instead of just being a group of players who are relying on only a couple of people to carry them through difficult times. The fans are rallying around the team again, as well, and that’s helping them feel the encouragement they need to keep going.
It’s not possible to tell where the Mariners will end up this season, as there are still a lot of games to be played. But one thing’s for certain. The team is bigger than the sum of its parts. While Cano is a valuable player and someone the Mariners will be glad to have back, they have also shown what they can do without him being there. The confidence they are gaining by his suspension could be the best thing to come out of the entire incident, and when he returns he’ll be back to work with a full team.
